# Is MSP Accreditation Worth It? When Insurers Start Asking

![Josh Peterson and MJ Shoer of GTIA discussing whether MSP accreditation is worth it on the BMK Vision Podcast, From The Trenches.](https://beringmckinley.com/hs-fs/hubfs/%23127%20-%20MSP%20Accreditation%20-%20Self-Regulate%20or%20Be%20Regulated%20%20FROM%20THE%20TRENCHES.png?width=1280&height=720&name=%23127%20-%20MSP%20Accreditation%20-%20Self-Regulate%20or%20Be%20Regulated%20%20FROM%20THE%20TRENCHES.png)

Josh Peterson learned who really runs general aviation on the day he tried to fly a better airplane. He had logged the hours the FAA requires, finished the extra training and checked every box in the regulations, and when he asked to take the plane up he was told that he met every government requirement and still could not fly it. The insurance company said no, and the FAA was not going to pay for the airplane if he wrecked it. Josh opens this conversation with MJ Shoer, Chief Community Officer at GTIA and a former MSP owner, with that story because he sees managed services drifting toward the same arrangement. In most of the market no license is required to open an MSP and no independent body vouches for one, so the parties with money at stake are starting to set the terms, while the provider carries the data risk BMK has described as [the MSP's invisible liability](https://beringmckinley.com/blog/data-risk-is-the-msps-invisible-liability). Other industries settled these questions long ago. [Copier dealers](https://beringmckinley.com/blog/watch-out-msps-copier-dealers-are-better-than-you-think) have run on a shared financial model for decades, while two MSPs of the same size can still disagree about something as basic as [time entry](https://beringmckinley.com/blog/time-entry-is-the-whole-msp-story-inspect-at-the-rate-you-expect).

So the question owners keep asking, whether MSP accreditation is worth the money and the effort, is really a question of leadership judgment and positioning. A credential is a financial asset only when someone outside the company prices it, and the effort it demands is mostly the execution discipline a well-run MSP should want anyway. The timing matters for long-term strategy too. GTIA is building a self-regulatory organization with Texas A&M that would accredit an MSP across operations, finance, sales, service delivery and cybersecurity, and insurers are already deciding, claim by claim, which providers' work they will pay for. What follows is how BMK reads that shift: why nobody validates MSPs today, how insurers are filling the gap, what a credential is worth and what changes its value, what accreditation will actually measure, and why the owners who will clear it easily are the ones already running their businesses to written standards.

## Anyone Can Call Themselves an MSP

When MJ Shoer still owned his MSP, he liked to tell a story about his wife, a genealogical researcher. It would have been easier, he said, for her to decide one day to become an MSP than for him to decide to become a genealogical researcher. She had gone to school for her work, earned an accreditation and trained for the kind of research she does, and he would have needed all of it to follow her. She, on the other hand, could have opened an MSP the next morning, signed clients, told them she knew what she was doing, and no independent body anywhere would have checked. He sold that MSP in 2015. He says the line is still true.

That asymmetry is the problem in one picture. A small business that hires an MSP hands over the administrative keys to its infrastructure, and in MJ's experience it chooses between providers the way people choose between contractors they have no way to evaluate: on a gut sense that it likes one owner better than the other. Electricians, plumbers, lawyers, accountants and doctors all work under a license or an accreditation that tells a buyer someone competent has looked. Managed services has certifications for individual technicians, from vendors and from bodies such as CompTIA and ISC2, but nothing that vouches for the company. MJ believes that gap explains why some insurers treat MSPs with so little respect. How do they know you know what you are doing? For most providers today the honest answer is that they have your word.

- A client hiring an MSP is handing over the keys to its business, and most choose on rapport because there is nothing else to compare.
- Technician certifications prove what individuals know. Nothing yet proves how the company operates, and that is what the client is actually buying.
- The absence of a credential does not keep standards out of the industry. It leaves them to whoever has money at stake.

## The Insurer Is Already Acting Like the Regulator

Josh describes a pattern he says he is starting to see. A client is attacked, the MSP gets the all clear to clean it up and runs up a bill of fifty or sixty thousand dollars, and the client says the insurance check is on its way. Then the insurer decides it will reimburse thirty thousand. The MSP is left chasing the other twenty thousand from a client who is now unhappy about paying it. It is the airplane story again. When there is no regulator, the party paying the claim decides what work counts, which providers it trusts and on what terms, and it decides one claim at a time.

Josh calls the underlying problem an asymmetry. The MSP begs the client to take security seriously and to spend the money, the client is free to decline, and the MSP is still the party left exposed when the breach comes. His instinct, which he admits may be naive, is to regulate network security itself so every business connected to the outside world plays from the same playbook. MJ widens the frame. There are few safe harbors for a provider that did the right work with the right expertise, and no MSP can out-defend a nation-state attacker indefinitely. If the industry does not learn to regulate itself and show regulators a model they can point to, he argues, government will do it instead. He cites CMMC, where the complexity of compliance pushed some smaller providers out of the defense market, and offers a gut estimate, which he is careful to call a gut estimate, that upwards of 30 percent of MSPs could struggle to meet a threshold written by regulators.

- When no standard exists, insurers set one claim by claim, which is the least predictable way to be regulated.
- Agree on incident scope, and on what the client's policy is expected to cover, before the incident rather than after the insurer has decided what it will pay.
- Self-regulation is not a favor to the industry. It is the alternative to rules written by people who have never run an MSP.

## Is MSP Accreditation Worth It?

Josh remembers the first time a client showed him the industry's trust mark, which MJ dates to 2012. Josh's reaction was that it was cool, and that nobody would care. Unless the association was about to spend an enormous amount of money marketing it to the people who buy managed services, an MSP that earned the mark got a stamp for its email signature and the job of persuading its own prospects that the stamp meant something. It did nothing for its liability insurance. MJ held that mark as an MSP owner and does not entirely disagree. Marketing it to buyers at the scale required would have been, in his words, a financial money pit. What made it work for him was explanation. He told clients it was the closest thing his industry had to a UL listing or the Good Housekeeping Seal, independent evidence that his recommendations came from an informed position rather than a wish to sell the latest widget. Owners who did that won with it. For owners who did not, it was one more logo in the collection. In the same era, MJ sat down with the owners of a healthcare client and one of its insurers, walked through what the mark required, and by his account it answered better than 75 percent of the insurer's questions.

That is the honest answer to whether MSP accreditation is worth it. A credential is worth what someone with money at stake is willing to price. Today that is mostly the client you take the time to educate, plus an insurer here and there. MJ says GTIA now has insurance carriers offering discounts to members that hold its Cybersecurity Trustmark, and governance, risk and compliance platforms building maturity models on top of it. The program itself is built on the Center for Internet Security's Critical Security Controls and assessed by a CREST accredited assessor, so it is not a logo you buy. Josh's test for when accreditation is fully worth it is blunt: a checkbox on every cyber insurance form asking whether the policyholder's provider is accredited, where the no means higher rates and the yes means lower ones. MJ calls that the grand slam, and agrees it is a steep mountain to climb.

- Accreditation pays when a third party with money at stake prices it. Until then its value depends on how well you explain it.
- Treat a credential as the start of a sales conversation, not a signature graphic. The owners who explained the original mark won with it.
- Watch the insurance forms your clients fill out. The day they ask about the provider's accreditation, the decision makes itself.

## What MSP Accreditation Will Actually Measure

In August 2026, GTIA and Texas A&M University's Global Cyber Research Institute announced the Consortium for Responsible IT Services, or CRITS, to establish a self-regulatory organization framework for the industry, with GTIA as the trade association partner and the future SRO. MJ explains the model through an example Texas A&M often cites from aviation, where a public and private partnership set the standard for a critical part or process, a self-regulatory organization accredited the companies doing that work, and the FAA adopted the result. CRITS is scheduled to hold its first member meeting in October 2026, and MJ says insurers are among the organizations involved. He also points to the university's law school and its Bush School of Government and Public Policy, which have experience drafting model legislation for state and federal regulators.

For an owner, the scope matters more than the structure. MJ describes the intent as defining best practice standards over the next couple of years for everything an MSP does: operations, finance, sales and marketing, technical service delivery, project management and cybersecurity, so that there is a framework to accredit an MSP as properly skilled and running the right controls and business processes. His reasoning is that a client trusting a provider should know it runs the controls it recommends. What if its own financial systems are exposed, its procedures unprotected, or the intellectual property it uses to serve the account leaks? He treats AI as part of the same question, because staff pasting spreadsheets and procedure documents into free AI tools is now a way data escapes, and GTIA's new Managed Intelligence Alliance, initiated by Pax8, is meant to set standards for delivering AI services to small and mid-sized businesses. None of this, MJ stresses, replaces NIST, CIS, Australia's Essential Eight or the UK's Cyber Essentials. The aim is to bring them together so a small business does not have to evaluate each one on its own.

- The accreditation being designed looks at the whole business, not just the security stack. Finance, sales, service delivery and project management are in scope.
- An MSP that recommends controls it does not run internally will be the first one exposed.
- AI governance belongs in the same conversation as cybersecurity, and the standards for it are being written now.

## Run Your MSP to Written Standards Before Anyone Asks

The moment that pushed Josh to write BMK's own standards came from a former copier dealer. The man had sold his copier business, started an MSP and landed in one of BMK's peer teams, and he told Josh what was driving him crazy. In the copier world there is an answer for everything: a financial model everyone has followed for thirty years and a known way to measure every truck roll. In managed services, everyone does everything differently. Josh took that as the final straw and set out to see whether the industry's operating practices could be standardized.

BMK has spent the last seven years building that answer. The BMK standards are organized into six domains, including service, sales and finance, each broken into subdomains and, in all, more than 180 individual standards. They are written as policies rather than processes, statements such as entering time as you go for eight hours a day or always having a dispatcher, and worded so that no reasonable owner would argue with them. Josh calls them immutable truths, and BMK's clients now cite them by number. That is why the accreditation question is less about the credential than about the business behind it. An owner who already runs to written policies will find an accrediting body's framework familiar. An owner who has never written down how the company works will find the same review exposing. The work is the same either way, and it pays long before anyone checks it, because consistent time entry, a dispatcher, a defined service process and honest numbers are what make an MSP profitable well before they make it accredited.

- Write your operating policies down now. Any accreditation will ask for evidence that they exist and that the company follows them.
- Standards are policies, not procedures: what must always be true, regardless of which tools you use to make it true.
- The owners who clear accreditation easily will be the ones who already run their MSP as a system rather than a set of habits.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is MSP accreditation worth it?

It is worth what someone with money at stake will price. Today that is mostly the clients you educate about what the credential means, and some insurers; according to MJ Shoer of GTIA, carriers are beginning to offer discounts to members that hold its Cybersecurity Trustmark. It becomes clearly worth it when cyber insurance forms ask whether a policyholder's provider is accredited and price the answer.

### What is the difference between MSP accreditation and certification?

Certifications from vendors and bodies such as CompTIA or ISC2 validate what an individual technician knows. Accreditation validates the company: its controls, processes and business practices, reviewed by an independent body against a published standard.

### What is CRITS?

CRITS, the Consortium for Responsible IT Services, was announced in August 2026 by GTIA and Texas A&M University's Global Cyber Research Institute to establish a self-regulatory organization framework for IT service providers. GTIA is the trade association partner and the future self-regulatory organization.

### What is the GTIA Cybersecurity Trustmark?

It is GTIA's validation of cybersecurity and risk management maturity for IT service providers. The program is based on the Center for Internet Security's Critical Security Controls (Implementation Group 2), supplemented by controls from other recognized frameworks, and an assessment by a CREST accredited assessor follows a readiness period.

### Will the government regulate MSPs?

Josh Peterson notes that he knows of no government regulation aimed at MSPs today. MJ Shoer's view is that if the industry does not regulate itself, government eventually will, and he points to CMMC, where the complexity of compliance pushed some smaller providers out of the defense market. A self-regulatory organization is the industry's attempt to set the standard before someone else does.

### How should an MSP prepare for accreditation?

Write down the policies the business runs on across service, sales, finance and security, and check that the controls you run internally match the ones you recommend to clients. Agree on incident scope and insurance assumptions with clients before something happens. Then pursue a validation your clients and their insurers actually recognize, and explain it to them rather than relying on the logo.

## Episode Highlights

- **00:00** - Cold open: Josh's test for when accreditation has done its job, a checkbox on every insurance form that changes the rate.
- **00:38** - An insurance company, not the FAA, decided which airplane Josh could fly, and the same logic is reaching managed services.
- **02:28** - When an insurer reimburses only part of an incident cleanup, the MSP and the client are left arguing over the rest.
- **04:11** - If the industry does not regulate itself, government will, and smaller MSPs would feel it first.
- **06:05** - The MSP asks the client to invest in security, the client can decline, and the MSP is still the one exposed.
- **07:30** - Opening an MSP requires no accreditation at all, unlike most professions that hold a client's trust.
- **08:26** - GTIA and Texas A&M are building a self-regulatory organization modeled on how aviation sets standards.
- **10:46** - Without a credential to compare, clients choose an MSP on rapport while handing it the keys to their business.
- **12:28** - Some insurers' lack of respect for MSPs comes from having no way to verify what an MSP knows.
- **14:25** - AI and cybersecurity are one discipline, and data leaking into public AI tools is now a business risk.
- **17:38** - BMK's standards started with a copier dealer who found no agreed answers in the MSP industry.
- **20:09** - Josh's critique of the original trust mark: a credential only matters when buyers care about it.
- **23:08** - Insurers and compliance platforms are starting to recognize the Cybersecurity Trustmark.
- **24:33** - The Managed Intelligence Alliance will set standards for delivering AI services to small businesses.
- **27:31** - Accreditation has done its job when the insurance form asks about it and the answer moves the rate.
- **28:43** - An insurer accepted the trust mark as evidence for most of a healthcare client's cybersecurity questions.
- **31:04** - Why the association sold the CompTIA brand and its certification business and became GTIA.
- **34:52** - GTIA's events now center on MSPs, a shift from the vendor-heavy shows of the past.
- **37:32** - Where to find MJ Shoer and continue the conversation.

Accreditation will reward the MSPs that can show how they run, not just what they sell. Turning the way your business operates into written, measurable standards is the work the Vision Operating System is built to support.
